Catching Your Breath by Athelda Ensley

Book Review: Breath by James Nestor

You may struggle with sleeping through the night or getting at least 8 hours of sleep. This is a problem that many people have dealt with for years. Insomnia and sleep apnea are common issues for individuals who are physically healthy otherwise. According to the Sleep Foundation, at least 10% to 30% of adults deal with chronic insomnia.

This condition and various others like asthma, and allergies, can be linked to improper breathing patterns. James Nestor the author of Breath delves into the study of proper breathing and its positive impact on not only overall health but sleep. It is important to have a sleep pattern that functions with NREM and REM completions.

Waking throughout the night for whatever reason may be caused because your breathing is out of sync. This may also have to do with some sort of interruption that results in disturbing your sleep. The number of disturbances often prevents a full cycle of sleep, which is recommended to be at least 8 hours.

Ancient Breathing

There are ancient practices, yoga for example that include breathing strategies. These practices involve inhaling for a certain number of beats and exhaling the same or longer. In Breath, we learn that lung capacity is strengthened and one’s health can be improved. Many cultures saw the importance of these practices and enjoyed longevity because of them.

Modern Techniques

Nestor underwent an extensive breathing study to share with readers. This showed the difference between exhaling through the nose as opposed to out the mouth. The author and another participant started with having their nostrils plugged for weeks and unplugged for weeks. The end of the study resulted in the physical benefits of purposely breathing, inhaling, and exhaling out of the nose. Their blood pressure, congestive problems, and sleep issues improved with this simple focus.

One of the most essential points made in this book is that everyone is responsible for their health. This means recognizing when something is not right physically and finding a solution. None of the findings in Breath directed readers to medicinal solutions. These were natural remedies and practices that allowed individuals to be active participants in transforming their health by breathing properly.
